Women + Waves- Newquay Based Surf Collective
I went on my first women + waves weekend in Newquay a few years back and since then I have been returning regularly for my fix of fun, friendship and ego-free surfing. This women only surf community organises surf trips in some of the best surf locations in the world, but it’s base and most regular events are based at Newquay activity centre on Towan beach. Since I first started surfing with women and waves it has grown from strength to strength, offering a growing variety of surf locations and activities including body boarding, stand up paddle boarding and wild swimming.
So what’s the big deal? And why do I love surfing with Women + Waves so much?
Well I think the best thing about Women + Waves is that it is about equal measures of progress and fun. I always finish a weekend smiling about how my surfing has improved but also about the new friends I have made. From the minute you arrive Rachel, Rob and the team make you feel really at home. This is why I and many others from around the UK feel so happy attending these events on their own. The groups are chosen based on ability and the groups I have been in seem to instantly bond, women of different ages, from different places with different experiences, just there to enjoy themselves.
The instructors focus on providing just the right amount of challenge and helping you to meet your own personal goals but there is also no pressure. They also address some of the key areas that many of us women seem to struggle with like confidence, especially on a crowded line up in Newquay in the summer. When you catch a wave the whole group cheers you on. When I have freaked out by the size of the waves, there are plenty of supportive faces and the reassurance of the coach helping me to conquer my fear!
Along with the constant in water coaching during the surfing sessions, there is also video analysis afterwards which is really useful in helping to understand how to improve. And when covid restrictions allow a meal out in the evening, to catch up with you group and the other groups with a few beers.
Unfortunately I have had to postpone my next Women + Waves surf weekend in Newquay due to a broken ankle but I hope to be back surfing with them again soon! If you want to learn to surf or progress your surfing, I would definitely recommend giving them a try.
